Advice

Postby f6100153 on Mon Nov 14, 2011 3:13 pm

Got a friend of mine that I have finally persuaded to start kitesurfing after getting him to watch the filthy west. He is coming from a surfing background and only wants to ride a surfboard. Plus he has had ago with my kites a few times on a land board and did alright and is pretty talented with foil kites.

Asked me what kite would be good for him to buy but I have only ever flown vegas's and evo's and don't know much about other kites. He is wanting to spend as little as possible for something half decent and safe, what do guys recommend for a good learning/wave kite?

My other question is do you think he could learn on a surfboard as a first board? They are all I ride now and I can't see any reason why not, if anything I'd say setting off on one is easier.

If anyone has anything that would be suitable lying around let me know, I have given him an old harness and he has loads of surfboards so only needs the kite.

Thanks in advance

Tom

I've got a 12m Airush Flow 2008 c/w bar/lines/pump/bag that is a great beginner/intermdiate kite. Its in great condition as not used it too much. It has one small professional repair by Surfstore and in no way affects the handling of the kite. The flow gets great write ups in the mags, is versatile and has loads of depower for someone starting out. Looking for £300 which is a bargin given the condition and little use the kite has received. If interested send me a private message and I'll send further details.

Thanks

Lessons first Tom. Even if he doesnt want to learn on a TT, a two day course will teach him all the safety aspects of kitesurfing.

In terms of kites, if its waves he is interested in, I would go towards a delta kite for sure. Something like a North Evo or Best Kahoona will be best. Will be able to pick a 1-2 year old up for not alot of $$ .

How about this? What about the Slingshot Key 10m starter package (They come in different sizes). Get a new Slingshot Key 10m kite with new bar and lines, new board and new harness for around £750-800 ish. I know it comes with a twin tip but I am sure you could shift that on for around £300 as it will be brand spanking new!! A brand new kite, bar and lines and harness for £550 ish....dirt cheap! :D

Just an idea.....

I dont see why he couldent learn on a surfboard, might take a bit longer to get up and riding due to being strapless though, but if he is a good kiter on foils and surfs it might not take too long.

kite wise, most kites on the market nowadays are decent kites, basicly look for something thats stable, fast (or has options to speed up slow down), good depopwer and most importantly in waves good relaunch......oh and I'd definatley go 4 line

how about this

if he just wanted the 9 he could probably sell the 12 for 230ish
