Budle Bay

Postby nekitesu on Fri Apr 21, 2006 6:09 pm

Description:

A lagoon just round the corner from Bamburgh beach. It is a tidal lagoon that fills up 2 hours before high tide and empties 2 hours after high tide. Relatively shallow in spots. No waves get into the lagoon so there is only wind chop to handle. Really beautiful spot.

Wind Direction Required:

Works in anything from SW to E with WNW being onshore.

Tide Required:

There is no water in the bay at low tide. Kiteable 2 hours before and after high tide.

Hazards:

The currents can get quite strong so be careful in a SW->NW wind and an outgoing tide. Best on an incoming tide. There is also not much beach at high tide. Other than that, the spot is great for kitesurfers of all levels.

Please Note: Budle Bay is closed to kitesurfing from November 1st to the end of March due to the site being on a migratory route for many species of birds. Please adhere to this rule.

Local Amenities:

Nothing so make sure you bring your own food and drink.

Popularity:

Very popular amongst North East kitesurfers in SW-W winds.

Extra Information:

None

I dont like Budle with any southerly in it - the dune and hill behind make it dangerously gusty in my experience. Westerly and Northerly are best directions, if its easterly there are better spots.

Definately agree with you there about the Southerlies. South winds are a no go at Budle IMO. You can just about get away with a SW but W round to E is best.

In a Southerly, just go to Beadnell, Alnmouth or Druridge.

Thanks James,

Will it be obvious when I get there? I don't know the area so not sure which campsite you mean (Warren Mill?).

we're currently planning a weekend trip up to Budle, and I was just wondering if there are any areas that you're not allowed to kite in or if the whole bay's allowed? also is kiteboarding possible or allowed at low tide?

Hi,

There are a number of buoys that mark the boundary of the water sports zone and people should not go passed these buoys. In addition, people should not go past the track leading down to the bay.

The area is marked out on the map as you approach the bay from the track and if you miss that just keep an eye on for the buoys. If you pass one, it's time to turn back around.

The buoys, one is line with the farmer’s lane, but knowbody should cross that as its shallow and rocky beyond that point anyway. The other buoy is directly inline with the other lane, but situated right across the other side – I think this only ever gets wet in really big tides (5m+).

Here is the designated water sports area marked out.

Image

Here is my version which shows where the buoys are.

The red lines shows the watersports area

The purple circles show where the bouys are

The blue line shows where the channel and where the rough water is

The green lines shows the middle of the bay

This is only a rough guide but basically shows the area we are allowed to go.

Also, Budle is no good for landboarding as the sand is too soft.
