Complete Beginner

Postby daz26 on Mon Jun 29, 2009 5:35 pm

Thought I would say hi, I'm completely new to the sport and I’m hoping to get some lessons in the next couple of weeks. Been wanting to give this sport a go for a couple of years now and after watching some fantastic kitesurfers while on holiday in Rhodes I thought I should finally give it a go. I have been on the internet for hours the past couple of weeks researching kites and boards but im completely baffled by the amount of choice. I know I will get advice from my instructor when I do my lessons however I would like a bit of advice from a number of people instead of relying on one person. I’m also confused about the size of kite to go for. I'm around 80 to 85kg, 5ft 10 and im not sure if i should get a 9m or 11m. I like the look of the waroo the North Evo and the Naish cult. I’m willing to spend around £500 on a kite and £200 on a board so i'm looking to get second hand stuff to make my money stretch a bit further. I understand this question is asked alot of times on the forum but any advice would be helpful.

I have a 9m naish cult from 2008 and i love it, its my high wind kite tho and i am a little heavier than you but not much not sure whether it i would recommend it to a complete beginner tho however my advice would be to get an 11 or 12m to start with there are many many kitesa out there to choose from and once you've had your lessons maybe go to a decent shop and see if you can demo as many as possible even if its only body dragging you'll soon find one that you like then check all the forums and websites for 2nd hand gear hope this helps and hope to see you on the water in the near future

james dixon used to be the top dog round here but sadly he's no longer supplying equipment the only places i know of around newc are surfstore in darlington (never been so can't comment on them) and northern freestyle if they are still in business in amble, however if you are prepared to travel a little there are a few shops not too far away that i know do demo gear

Cheers for that mate. I don’t mind travelling, I travel down to Richmond allot so might check out that store in Darlington next time im down. I got my eye on an Airush vapour 2, so hopefully I will be on the water soon. Where do all the newbie’s hang out? Would be good to meet up with a few people for a few pointers.
