Description:
Enormous, sandy horseshoe shaped bay about 35 minutes north of
Newcastle. A really great spot if you want some space, however the wind can be quite fickle here. No explanation as yet, but it can be 5mph SE at Druridge and 15 mph SE at Beadnell!
Wind Direction Required:
Works in anything from NE round to SSW with SE being onshore.
Great spot in a S or SE.
Tide Required:
Cannot be kitesurfed at high tide as the tide runs right up to the sand dunes. All other tides are fine. The beach has a very gentle sloping gradient so when the tide switches, it does come in quickly - you have been warned!
Hazards:
The beach is often much quieter than Beadnell / Bamburgh areas. At low tide the amount of space for launching / landing is great. This spot is very popular with land boarders and buggiers at low tide so please show them some respect and give them plenty of space. There is a rocky outcrop at the north of the bay which should be avoided. The spot is shallow for 15-20m out and is good for beginners.
Local Amenities:
There is nothing at Druridge so make sure you bring plenty of food and drink with you.
Popularity:
Quite popular with kitesurfers, but mainly a meeting point for land kite activities.
Extra Information:
Please keep to the north end of the beach. Northern Freestyle shop in Amble has worked hard to create a kiting area. This area is not marked out in any way but it located at the North end of the beach about 300m south of the rocky outcrop.
