I was priviledged to be the first to try the first prototype from North East manufacturer Dixon today.
The construction of the board is forging out in a new direction, using a laminated bi-axial grain wood construction for maximal strength and unique flex characteristics. The board has little to no rocker, as it relies on the flex characteristics of the construction to absorb the chop.
The board has a square shape with considerable cut outs on the corners to eliminate spray and improve its turning ability. The graphics are simple and effective, and is sure to be a head-turner on any beach.
After hearing the low-down on its new construction, i was eager to give it a go on the water, and it certainly doesn't disappoint! The board flies up onto the plane, and its flex properties ensure a silky smooth ride. The board is quite skatey, and would be ideal for all manner of switches to and from revert and blind. The board also seems to be very capable upwind, and despite the sometimes marginal conditions today, maintaining my ground was childs-play.
This boards name suggests its for pro's, but its characteristics allow it to be used with equal ease by a first-timer all the way up to experts wanting a board for hardcore freestyle.
I'm sure that when this board goes into production, the likes of the bigger manufacturers will be very interested in this departure from well established construction methods, the future for Dixon could very well be a bright one.
I'll try and get hold of some photo's to post on here.
