I'm due to fly with thompson next week, when we booked the flight we paid an extra £45 each way for kitesurfing gear, it didn't state what size or weight when we were booking or on the invoice.

I called Thompson 3 times and asked what are the weight limits, I was first told 25kg, then unlimited (within reason) and then 30kg. I have a north travel bag and managed to fit 2 boards, 4 kites and harnesses etc in it, I have no idea what the weight is and cant think off anywhere to weigh it.

Does anyone have any experience/advice with weight limits when flying?

I took 1 twin tip board, 2 kites, harness and shortie in a kite bag with small wheels on it and that was 28kg!
It might seem obvious but try standing on a set of household scales to get your weight in kgs then stand on the same scales again with the bag on your back, take one weight from the other then that is the weight of your kit??

I will go buy some scales to try that idea.

You could always go to the airport before your holiday and use the scales where you normally check in. Just find an empty check-in desk and stick your bag on the belt, look at the digital reading - bobs your uncle. I did that before my holiday and worked a treat. Mind you might get some looks if you put a big coffin bag on the belt of an empty desk.

Just flown with them in September and the limit was 30kg .
I took 27kg out as some of your gear may be still wet on the way back and they just charge what they like for over weight bags

2 boards and 4 kites

Just a suggestion but I would take 1 board and 2 kites. Remember it is normally £10+ extra for every kg you are over, there and back so that’s going to be around £180 extra

Good suggestion but Im taking enough gear for me and my brother as he's meeting me out there but flying from some other country.

We will have one board and 2 kites each, I will see what happens.

They can refuse to take anything over 30Kg

buy some vac pac bags and put the kites in those and stick them in your normal luggage. You can get them at any DIY store or even some £1 shops. Works a treat!

Also, are the kites the same make, as you could take just one bar and lines per set of kites?

Sat in the airport now, got all my bags on at no extra cost.
