Fuerteventura so far.......

Postby Andrew McMillan on Fri Jul 15, 2011 10:32 pm

What a place Fuerteventura is!!

Staying in costa calma down at the south east of the island. A very big area of empty land and mountains, then you come across small towns here and there, then all of a sudden, BANG...the wind hits you....yeeeha!!

Day 1

Woke up at 7am to a Redcar look alike sky, dull and misty but this soon cleared to blue sky and 25 degrees.

We sailed at the Reni Elgi centre which is cross off conditions with the wind coming through the mountains. Don't worry guys, there are plenty of rescue craft knocking around. For some weird reason, I cannot understand where the wind comes from as it was light winds up north and then it was blowing 8/6m weather at this place. :? Once the tide comes in there are some amazing flat water lagoons. Yesterday, we had 25-30knot winds which made an exciting time on the 8m...well powered! :D Got a steady 5 hour session in, so just breaking into easy for the first couple of days before the 9 hour shifts come out.

Day 2

Well one word......HOWLING!

No Redcar sky in sight, just blue sky and rustling of trees.

At the Reni Elgi centre again, with some really strong winds blowing through the mountains meant for a very gusty day. Measured the wind at 25 - 47mph at one point but I think it was averaging out at 35 - 40+ knots. Well powered on my 5.5m for the first hour or two then something strange happened. Bang went the safety on my comp stick which puzzled me. With the safety fired I was like WTF. Was thinking I must have knocked the safety so pulled the lines back through to find that the safety cuff (butterbox) had cracked and smashed...great!! Already had this problem with the butterbox cracking and smashing on my other bar so was not best pleased. All this was happening when I had some bloke shouting and balling at me cause I went too close to his son…..I was only about 150 yards away but the good old shouting of the international F OFF seemed to do the trick. I Luckily enough was on a turn back out from the beach so I could stand up. A fellow German kite surfer called Chris Dick was kindly able to put a temp fix in with some strong kite tape. Big thanks to that fella!

After an hour or two sorting that out, I decided to hit the water again to test the fix out and to get some more kitesurfing in of course. The wind was pumping at this stage, with well over 40knot winds coming through which was good for the some huge jumps. The wind was VERY gusty at this stage. 30 mins later I couldnt hold the kite down so decided to call it a day at 4pm.

I am knackered now and this piece of text probably doesn’t make sense, but hey....cannot be bothered to re-read it.

Day 3

Back again to the Reni Elgi centre tomorrow for some flat water.

Going to explore the island on Sunday so hopefully will try some beaches up north….Flag beach maybe?

More info to follow. Does not look like I am missing much back home in terms of the wind so I think I will enjoy the 25knot winds, sun and flat water  8)
