Gybing a surfboard

Postby Andy B on Thu Apr 21, 2011 4:58 pm

I'm determine to get out on my surfboard more this year but everytime I look to turn around a corner I seem to struggle to get the front foot out of strap?

As i approach the turn I raise the kite a little, then take out the back foot and slide it over the middle to initiate the carve, the front foot I try to ease out of the strap alittle as I do this i turn the kite then run with It but I find I still have weight over my back foot making it difficult to remove the front to make the switch.

Confused about the foot switch any help guys????

Remove the straps. It will save you hours in the long run. Without the staps you can figure out exactly how your feet need to be in the turn without anything getting in the way. You'll also learn about weighting / foot pressure and where you feet should be to get the best out of the board on the wave and when tacking back up wind.

It may sound daunting but it really isn't that bad. Just don't go out on a mental day for your first strapless session. Once you've got it nailed, put the straps back on and make sure they are super loose. Alternatively, you might like it strapless that they never go back on!

I ride strapless 80% of the time and only put the straps on when the waves are huge, it is howling or if it is directly on shore.

Good luck. :D

Cheers Andrew I have had them off and on a couple of times but have been but off going strapless waiting for flater conditions. Got sick off waisting time waiting for flat water so but the straps back on. I am keen to get a better understanding on wave riding but would like to be able to get more out of the board in general bump and jump conditions, then progress to more dedictaed wave riding. I will just have to bite the bullet and go strapless again and head to Budle or Paddies.

Stick a 8ft leash( just means you less likely to get ping ) on and just wax the board up nice and you will be fine ... all i ride is strapless and it takes a bit getting use to getting over white water and the peaks of waves but just choose the shoulder of the waves and head for that . Like james said its so much better then strapped for finding the sweet footing ... another good tip is back foot forwade off the tail pad will help you get the weight centred better for getting up wind !!!
