Grrrrr, walk of shame so many times yeasterday    and the biggest problem is; Yup you got it Pol getn upwind no probs, absolutely stonkin upwind on light breeze. I'm ded chuffed for her bu I'l be honest,,,,,   I wanna do that......

Wot is going on? Speed slowish, but powered, twist hips, lay back to hold the pull. aim upwind. result = Downwind fekn again. Overpowered lots of times and can't hold it, or stall the board and have to dive/restart to recover. Tried long runs out and held it but lost it all on the return.

Then I manage to cruise all the way up the waterline almost back to wer I started. untill the water ran out, Ouch. This is doing my head in.

Where am I going wrong (don't say try an LEI or paragliding  )

Duncan,

Sounds as though your stance is there, are you keeping the front leg straight and all the weight on the back leg?

What size is your board? When I switched from a 142 to 132 I found staying up wind so much easier.

I have to say it - have you ever tried a bow?

edge with purpose.

it also took me ages to get going upwind. what finally sorted me out was pete's advice "imagine you are pulling a wheelie on the board".

this made me realise that the reason you are bending your back leg is because you are shifting your weight over the back of the board.

the bending of the leg is the result of an action, not the action itself.

it sounds like you are doing everything right except, perhaps, putting your weight in the right place.

either try and imagine yourself pulling a wheelie, or try and get your backside as far towards the back of the board as possible.

When your up nd gannin Dunc just try running of downwind then edging against it (edge and release without the release).

Youll build up a feel for how much you can lean back! The reason Pol's getting upwind's cos shes taking the power in. Your powers being wasted when you skim downwind. As soon as you stop that and get a good edge the board while do the rest and youll be stonkin upwind.

P.S dont be affixaited with going up wind, you can try as hard as u like but you wont unless your body and board are in the right position!

Yo Dunc, I'm venoms till i die too and what i found really helped me stay up wind was to keep the kite quite low over the water, as if you keep it too high it pulls you up and off your edge.

Also what Gillstah said about leaning back, if your back leg aint aching a bit after a couple of tacks then you're not leaning hard enough!
