kite size!

Postby flaminmad on Sat Jan 21, 2012 11:38 am

Morning all

Im quite new to the sport and have a question!

Everytime i've wanted to go out kitesurfing over the last month or so theres either been too much or too little wind to play with. I've got a 10 meter LEI at the mo and therefore im just wondering what the most frequently used kite size is up here (redcar and seaton areas) and would anyone recommend getting a different size :-)
Bear in mind im new to the sport!
Many thanks!

Alex :)

A 12M would be a good option - however, as someone who admits to being "quite new to the sport" I'd caution against going smaller than your 10M as doing so may tempt you out into winds that are simply too strong for your experience - yes the kite will be smaller, but it will also be more responsive and things can go wrong quickly.

A 15M kite may also be worth checking out - the wind range on the bigger kites these days is outstanding.

What you also need to think about is your board - people can get obsessed by kite size, but what you're standing on has a huge impact on what conditions you can and cannot ride - I've been out on my 12M in barely 10 Knots of breeze (just enough to keep it in the air with constant sining) on a 11'6" SUP board - there is no way I could have done that on my 132 twin tip.

By quite new to the sport I mean have flown foil kites for years but only started kitesurfing last year and have only done the 3 day bksa course so far.

The board i've got is a 136 x 40 twin tip if that helps?

Depends on how new your 10m is also, a new 10m has similar wind range to my 2007 12m.

Its an 'Ocean Rodeo Diablo 10' year 2010 I believe (cant remember if its 2010 or 2009) and i've been advised the wind range is about 15knts to about 26 knots for anexperianced rider and about 15-23 for a beginner.

The times i've flow it i've found kite control to be pretty easy cause of previous experiance :D

I mainly ask because i've read in a lot of places its good to have say a 7m, 10m and 14m to cover all wind ranges and give a choice of kit for the weather and appropriate skill

If you have the funds then it is good to have a few kites in your quiver eventually IMO your better off getting some experience in kitesurfing before you decide which other kites your gonna need, you might find that you want something smaller than a 7 and/or larger than a 14 to give you a greater range but a 10 is a good starting point as you go out in wind that is suitable to learn in. It's not easy learning in low wind with a big kite and equally you don't want to go out in too high wind as it can be more dangerous as a beginner

5.5m, 8m, 10m and 12m = PERFECT! 8)

Works a treat for me......

To be honest, with the kites today, I wouldn't go any larger than a 12m. My Rally gets me going in 14 knots.

Buy a big twintip and use the same kite and if wind picks up change boards
