Learn how to fly before surf?

Postby chubbstardeluxe on Fri Aug 26, 2011 12:42 pm

Hi,

Right guys I've just signed up to the forum and not yet read back through the older posts to see if my question has already been covered - so sorry in advance.

Essentially is it worth spending a few months learning to fly a power kite before moving onto learning how to kite surf?

I have got some of the skills that I assume can crossover to kite surfing, like I'm a seasoned snowboarder, so my balance isn't too bad, and when I was younger I have been out on the water and sailed dinghies. Although my kite flying experience is about nil.

Cheers,

Hi, welcome to the forum

yes, some kite flying experience will help you loads when learning to kitesurf. you can always tell people who have flew powerkites before learning.

I would definitely recommend getting a 2-3m foil kite to have a play around with. using this will help you get to grips with turning, the wind window ect and just getting used to the feel.

where do you live ?

Aye Welcome!

Yes defo worth spending £50 on a second hand power kite to play with. Then do the smart thing and invest in some lessons. A 3 day course should get you up and riding. Dont be tempted to buy some cheap second hand gear under the delusion you can teach yourself in no-time (I did this). It is possible but if i had my time learning over again i would have done a weeks course in Egypt or something. Probably would have saved me a year in progression time. :D

Cheers guys, I think that's what I'll go and do. Any tips on what to look for in a second hand power kite?

try and get something that flys on a bar instead of handles, this will teach you the right technique to steer the kite.......think bike handle bars not car steering wheels when flying a kite

There are lots of options for power kites too and as usual it all depends on your budget also there is the option to get a landboard for when you can't get out on water, for me though and this is only my opinion, I would go for a flexifoil it'll last
