Longsands - Tynemouth

Postby nekitesu on Fri Apr 21, 2006 6:03 pm

Description:

Fairly small sandy beach located 10 miles outside of Newcastle. This is the nearest beach to Newcastle and is very popular with locals and tourist, especially during the summer months. It is the main surfing beach for the area. It picks up plenty of swell and has hosted the National Surfing Competition for the past 3 years.

Wind Direction Required:

Works in NE to SE with E being onshore.

Tide Required:

At high tide there is very little beach left so best from low to mid.

Hazards:

There are many hazards at Tynemouth so it is really best left to the experienced kitesurfer. The beach is always busy with locals and tourists. The water is also busy with surfers, kayakers and jet skiers. The waves are often very large and the beach has large cliffs surrounding the entire bay which can make the wind very fluky and gusty. There are rocky reefs at either end of the beach and a rocky outcrop in the middle just in front of the surf shop.

Local Amenities:

Tons of local shops in Tynemouth villiage located directly behind the beach.

Popularity:

Not very popular. You may see the odd local kitesurfer.

Extra Information:

You can park on the street behind the beach (if you can find a spot). Some spots require tickets, others are free. The traffic wardens are very active so make sure you check.
