Machrihanish - tips and advice

Postby Rossco on Wed Apr 06, 2011 1:20 pm

Hey guys,

I am off to Machirhanish on the 15th for a week of surfing and kitesurfing with the Mrs.

Was wondering if anyone has been and if so, what advice and tips on wind and waves you might have?

We are staying at the Campsite in one of the neat little wigwams they have, which should be cool and a little drier and warmer than the old tent! Got a couple of days of surf lessons booked too with the wife, hoping to get my surfing dialed in and focus on wave riding this year. So any advice would be much appreciated.

Cheers lads,

Ross

Hi Ross,

Andrew and I went there last year and had a great time. It has a lot of potential. We didn't get the 'perfect' conditions but really enjoyed what we got.

The link to the thread we posted at the time is:

viewtopic.php?f=6&t=2338&p=13184&hilit=Machrihanish#p13184

We camped at the only campsite we knew about in Machrihanish itself. There is a pub that is walking distance although pints are pricey.

I got a surf the first day when the wind dropped off. The place can go off in terms of waves. The second day we had strong winds and big waves which was just perfect for me. I still day dream about the session. The water was very clear, it was a top 5 session for me. The waves were massive but they weren't too intimidating as they rolled nicely.

There were millions of jelly fish so take gloves and boots so it doesn't ruin your session. I didn't have boots and got stung a few times. Nothing worse than a nettle sting but still annoying.

Have a great one.

James

Aright Scott,

Is that deal with angelo at S2AS? I tried to get in on that one, but he said he was only lookin for the best wave riders, which is fair enough, as i am only just getting into wave riding. But i am hoping to get a demo of one of the noise kites when he gets them in.

Yeah the wife and i have got one of those Wigwams for the week, they look class! Really looking forward to the break. And hoping for some good wind and waves whilst up there.

When are you thinkin of going? We will be here from the 16th til the 24th, so we might cross paths. Keep an eye out for my Takoon kites if your up there and come say hi!

Well, arrived here at Machrihanish camping and caravan park this afternoon, after one hell of a drive! What a road!!!! Amazing scenery too.

Site great, beach unreal. Wish redcar beach was like this!!!!

Just checked the forecast however.......and where the fuck has all the wind gone???????????????????

Looks like i might get one day in offshore conditions if i feel brave enough!!!!!

The waves are lookin pretty good though for surfing. couple of days of lessons ahead with the mrs, lookin forward to that. Will be at Westport beach tomorrow. I'll take my kites along just incase the forecast is wrong!!!!

Will post again in the coming days and try get some pics up too.
