Multiple boards

Postby peet on Sun Nov 04, 2007 8:55 pm

Hi Guys,

I was wondering how many of you use multiple (ie. Twintip) boards for different conditions?

I have a 145x41 nobile 555, which i love to pieces, which i've so far used in every condition my kite will take. I have no real problem with the weight of the board for tricks and anything like that, and love the speed of it in marginal conditions, i havent particularly noticed it being a pain in windy conditions, but i dont have anything to compare it with.

I was just wondering whether it would be worth my while getting a sub 130cm board for windy days, and what difference i could expect?

Cheers,

Peet

Kitesurfing with 2 board quiver - light and strong winds

Postby nekitesu on Mon Nov 05, 2007 1:35 pm

Peet

I've had 2 boards for quite a while now - one to get me out in the light stuff (yours seems pretty perfect for that having seen you out on days that I could hardly get moving although that might also be something to do with all the lard I'm carrying around these days) and one for the strong stuff.

IMO opinion you will definately notice a difference riding a shorter board (maybe a little thinner but not too much) than 145 in strong winds and choppy waters.

I'm not sure I would go any smaller than around 130cm as the only time I've gone below 130cm in the lulls I'm really struggling to keep myself on the plane. For me at 13.5 stone, in strong winds I'm happiest on something around 130-132cm x 39-40cm. It will be different for others though based on weight and experience etc.

All makes are different and some will handle the strong winds better than others. I'm currently riding the Underground FLX 132 and I've never had a smoother ride in choppy waters and has a double concave which is suppose to help it excel in the chop. The only thing is I do need to be nicely powered up in order to have fun on it, any sub 18mph winds and I start struggling.

Prior to that I rode the CrazyFly Pro-Line 132x41 for a few years and loved it. Better low-end than the FLX (probably due to the extra bit of width) and good in chop but not quite as smooth as the FLX.

I guess it all depends on finances and whether you can be bothered to carry 2 boards around with you just in case the wind picks up but they do give a nicer ride. You should ask to borrow someones next time it's blowing a hoolie to try for yourself. Your welcome to have a go on mine if it ever gets windy again at a weekend!

Just my 2 cense.

I'm planning on having a 3 kite quiver, a 15, an 11 and a 9.

I've got my aircraftcarrier of a board, and was thinking about picking up a cheap second one for high winds (there are lots of good '07 bargains out there at the moment, as people switch to '08 kit)

I like doing a bit of everything, blasting along, attempting to do tricks (ha!), and wavesailing too.

Can't believe you're gonna be at paddies all week Scott! Wish I could! Will maybe see you on weds, as the forecast is looking pretty good.

Peet,

I wouldn't bother with the 15. It will be too slow and wont give you much benefit over you 11. If anything spend that money on a skim board or surf board for the lighter winds.

That's what I reckon anyways.

It depends what you want to do in the light stuff. If you just want to cruise around, the 11m is best. If you want to be powered up, kite parked, the 15m is great in from 12 knots in flattish water / big board but don't expect it to turn like the 11m :D

i have 2 boards, two kites.

re: kites -as andy says not much point going bigger than 11m unless you are a pie eater. i am a pie-eating vegetarian of 88kg so have a 14m :-)

re: boards. min of two is a really good idea. i have lost cause 135x47 for lightwind and my trusty 138x39 takoon vegas from '04. would like to add a surfboard but i don't think it will get much use to be honest.

Cheers guys, sounds like getting a sub 130 is pointless, and anything much over 135 aint gonna be too different from what i already have.
I'd probably be much less inclined to get a second board if the 555 footstraps fitted better. My board quite often flies off doing backflips, never mind any of the unhooked craziness :) (it does fit better with booties on, but the straps are just too wide to fit properly without - perhaps its because its a big board, and it expects big feet?!? i dont know :) )
