I would definatley get a trainer kite first and will always recomend it to a beginner with no kite experience.
Since I started kitesurfing I have met loads of beginners down the beach.
I have helped quite a few people who have had lessons but had no kite experience before. However when watching them fly a kite some peoples kite skils where pretty poor (not knowing how to turn the kite/relaunch, ect).
on the other hand I have met other people who have had previouse kiting experience from trainer kites to landboarding. These people already have the kite skills thus making it so much easier when learning in the water. Instead of having to worry about flying kite they can just concentrate on the board.
I know a few people who have gone from landboarding to the water and they have been up and riding first time out, mainly because they know what to do with the kite.
