Retro fit 5th line 2005 C kite

Postby Spangle12 on Sun Jun 19, 2011 12:36 pm

Hi,

Was out on friday night and had a bit of a mare re-launching and landing my kite. Did it in the end but christ is it a hell of a lot of work. Saw this video today and decided I want that system.

Was looking for some advice on fitting a 5th line to my wook 3 (2005). I've got the tabs on the leading edge to attach a bridle so i'm sure it's possible.

My question is, firstly does anyone know if i can get a specific takoon wook 5th line kit? If not will any 5th line kit work to the same effect, such as this one http://media.bestkiteboarding.com/manua ... manual.pdf (although i can't actually find it for sale anywhere)

Secondly, would I be right in thinking that the 5th line then becomes my leash line. Currently i've got one of my leading edge lines as the leashed line running through a ring at the bar. Would I now fix this one at the ring and then run the 5th line through the ring?

Any help/advice would be hugley appreciated.
Thanks
Cameron

yes you can fit a 5th line relatively easy. you wont be able to buy a takoon one as its a pretty old system now.

to make your own

Firstly buy some dynema from a sail shop/online. use this to make a y bridle from the attachment points on the LE. at the bottom of the Y tie a few knots about an inch apart but the knots should be in line with the wongtips when the kite is laid leading edge down.

then you need a kite line to use as the 5th line

then you will need more dyneema to create a mini5th which will run through ther bar ( I havent seen your bar setup so cant really explain much more.

but to be honest if I was you id only make a 5th if I really knew what I was doing. Also the kite will probably relaunch fine without a 5th line. if the wind is ligh and the kite is in the water LE down grab the center lines above the bar (on the trim strap) and swim towards the kite until it flips on its backk like a U shape then pull a back line and up it will come.

Also it will probably cost you about £30 to make a 5th line, I think your better of putting that money away and save up for a kite that is a bit newer 06/7 onwards which will have better relaunch and it will make the learning process ALOT easier.

Thanks Jamie,

I was just trying work how easy/difficult it would be to do. It's not massivly high up priority list to spend money on but it doesn't seam out of the question difficult. I've got a spare kite line too at some point i probly will do it but in the mean time i will keep practicing my water relaunching. It's more the self landing thing that i find difficult or more frustrating than difficult. It's easy to self land by leashing my kite but then it takes ages to lay the kite out and untangle the lines.

Thanks for the advice anyway though. Very helpful
