SeaBreaze

Postby CFVANDAN on Wed Apr 20, 2011 9:22 am

Trying to get my head around what exactly causes a seabreaze to build one day but not the next. I think i get the basic principal ie warm enough to heat the land so the air above rises, causing the colder air from above the sea to rush in. But there must be other factors involved as it didnt happen last night when it had been 18deg in middlesbrough most of the day and was already a light Easterly to start with. Sunday i experienced it counter a SW and build to 15mph when there was nowt forecast & Monday it Built to 18knt when it hadnt been that hot??

Any experts out there who can help me predict if it is going to be worth the trip to the beach in future?

XC detailed forecast shows pressure does this have an effect?

Yesterday i noticed there was a fret (i think its called, a thick fog just off the coast) Could i have taken that as a sign that it wasnt gonna happen?

I like to think theres some theory behind it but ive come to the conclussion thats its mostly luck, conditions do help though.

You can go down on perfect 'seabreeze days'. A light easterly nice and hot, been sunny all day and the seabreeze just doesent kick in.
however you can go down on days which are mild and overcast and get a seabreeze. (like monday)

sea frett; well me and murray have been using the sea fret as a sign of a seabreeze, and the times weve been down it has been quite accurate. But then again this is probably just a coincidence and leads back to luck.

When you do get a good strong seabreeze it makes up for the last 2 sessions you sat on the beach waiting

I've found out that the best chance is with a SE wind. It can happen on an East but forget it if there is any northerly in it.

It there is no wind forecast (i.e. < 5mph) it is going to have to be pretty hot to get one going. A lightish 8-10mph SE forecast along with all day clear skies have seen an almost 100% success rate for me driving to the Chem Works or Blyth. I'm pretty sure I've missed a ton of other sea breezes but that has been my bench mark for scoring.

Also, I find that the fret kills it. A fret starts due to a sea breeze and the water being super cold (often spring and early summer). Often it can stay about a mile out to sea and that is fine but when it causes cloud formation over the coast (often only for approx a 1 mile band) it weakens the breeze considerably.

That is my take on it anyway and mainly based on the Tynemouth to Blyth stretch. Also, Tynemouth never really gets it. It can be pretty windless at Tynemouth but if you can see white caps way out at sea, Blyth is normally on.

Fingers crossed for a few more. Friday looks like the best chance around this way......
