Stopping the Death Run

Postby Addstarr on Tue Aug 26, 2008 12:53 pm

I am sometimes getting a bit overpowered and blasting off downwind ending up out of control. I'm trying to force down that back heel to point upwind a bit moore and sheet out a bit but the board just skids away and I loose control. Has anyone got any tips?

A few solutions and explainations as to why it happens in the first place, on this thread:

Hope this helps

It's a sign of being overpowered for the conditions, you need to depower the kite or use a smaller one

Great Link, thanks Peet. Sounds like the best way to handle it is not to get into it in the first place which hopefully will come with a bit more experience.

If you are going on death runs with a bow/hybrid kite then trim it in more at the strop as it sounds like you dont have enough depower range on the bar. You are doing the right thing trying to dig your edge in, but as you have found out once you get mega speed up and its a bit choppy its almost impossible to keep the edge in - by this time its too late for that approach. The best thing I find in this circumstance, absolutely no joke, is just send the kite up and jump! Transfers all your speed into lift, and you land and can start off again.

I learnt this with C kites when i used to end up on death runs all the time, takes a bit of nerve but it works
Apparently its last words before being battered and fried were… "at least it auto zeniths… ouch". Lazydog.

Would agree with Akamini here, if I find I'm flying along over my comfort zone and sheeting out or edging the board doesn't do it, I send the kite right up to 12 o'clock, pull in and hang fire. Calm and serene is quickly restored. Regroup and away again.
