From the article...... :? :?

Despite its grey seas and freezing weather, Redcar has even been compared favourably to Hawaii.

Are they talking about the same Redcar......

I think that's what you call 'artistic licence' i.e. Not knowing what you are talking about but then just bullshitting/making it up as you go along... Also know as regional journalism! ;-)

On a serious note, was the guy insured as I am sure the job of cutting the lines down wasn't cheap!

Yes the guy was full insured. i was talking with guy before he set up the kites and go on water, told him about danger on this spot and tell him dont stay close to power lines he set up like everybody front side car park, but most people see when dark cloutch gone and feel power on 12m, even i hardcore wind condition rider canot ride on my 12m and put away, start again with 9m get quick shot and put away 9m couse was so gusty and didnt feel i can ride. On the time when i was ready see the lad coming out of water, first kite lift him up a bit he pull the saftly on chickenloop but kite still puul him over and quick decision to pull seaftly leash probly save him from injuries. If he will go on back side he will drag on water nad maybe one of lads on sadn can save his kite....
Always look around you and check everything before go on the water.
Experience and a lot of post on diferent forums tell you any saftly system can goes wrong
Hope lad will come back to kitesurfing and will get right place to start with sport again.

sounds like he did not see the massive bank of cloud coming over... black coulds carry wind, easliy up to double what the current conditions are so if you are already overpowered then get your kite landed long before the cloud hits!

I had the same issue at Budle on the same day, was out on my 10.5m and was really well powered (but not overpowered), I saw a large bank of black cloud in the distance and got back to the shore and got someone to land my kite and I disconnected my lines. Within 5 minutes it was so strong I was having to really hold on the leading edge on the kite I reckon it was gusting 40kts!
