Just a quick review on the main beach at W-S-M.
Was in Bristol for a course this week and took my gear on the off chance of a sneaky session. Forecast was pants but there was a half decent sea breeze running so gave it ago. Due to the orientation of the beach (N-S) and the coastline further towards Devon it very rarely picks up any swell other than windblown, (so im told). Landscape is slightly different than to what we're used to in Northumberland but good for a change! Due to various esturaries in the area at low tide the surface of the beach is covered in silt that when the tide comes in is brought into suspension which gives the impression of kitesurfing on mud/hot chocolate, again good for a change! Westerly wind is bang onshore and was very clean. go 2hrs either side of high tide and you should be fine but dont be out of the water any later than 2.5hrs after high tide as apparently when the tide gets that low the mud gets really sticky/horrible/dangerous! I was out 2hrs before which was a bit of a walk but because of the distance the tide advances you would be pretty much able to kitesurf to your car parked on the beach. Pay attention when the tide is out to the various signs and posts that have been driven into the beach, they are in straight lines and obvious so dont worry too much but its worth knowing their position.
So good for a laugh if your down there with a couple of hours to kill or passing close by but I wouldn't base a trip around the kitesurfing, on the main beach at any rate.
