When does the wind change on the east coast?

Postby Rossco on Fri Feb 29, 2008 12:01 pm

Hi

I am new to the area (area being, redcar and cleveland, North east yorkshire), what time of year or month does the wind change on the east coast, to get some onshore or cross shore winds blowing? Since i moved to the area it has just been westerleys constantly.

Happy Kiting wherever you are!

if you take a look at http://www.wunderground.com/weatherstation/WXDailyHistory.asp?ID=ICLEVELA4&graphspan=year&month=2&day=29&year=2007
or http://www.wunderground.com/weatherstation/WXDailyHistory.asp?ID=ITYNE&graphspan=year&month=2&day=29&year=2007

This is the records for a couple of weather stations last year, and as you can see there is no particular time when easterlies are more prevalant. The predominant wind direction for the UK is SW, which is shown quite clearly on the graphs.

Besides this, i'd say that in summer months there is a better chance of easterly sea breezes, but these arent necessarily particularly strong.

The good news is that there are places to sail in the North East when the wind is in the west, or you can always take a trip to the west coast. There is a location guide off the main index (close to the bottom).

Hope this helps

Still waiting for those easterlys, but it is getting closer, although i haven't seen anyone out around redcar or marske yet. Still waiting on my new wettie!

Anyone been out around on the water near redcar recently?

Well I wasn't the only one there 8)

I'm not sure what you call the bit of beach, but it was between Marske and Redcar, nearer the Marske end of the beach from on of the car parks there.
