Where to go this week?

Postby CraigT on Wed Jun 03, 2009 8:41 am

Hi, can anyone tell me how to get to the chemworks? I'm a newbie looking to get some practice time in this week and according to the locations list and the online weather the only choice is the chemworks?

Also if there is anyone looking for a mate to lend a hand launching/landing I'm interested. I've just bought my own gear and I'm at the stage of getting the board on and getting up but not blasting around.

I spent Friday, Saturday and Sunday up at Druridge getting to know my new gear, practicing on land, skiing on the sand, doing some jumps and doing some body dragging. Sunday was totally still but I took the surfboard up and the kids loved it.

Tynemouth looks good until Monday so I'll be down there if I can't find anywhere to kitesurf.
Cheers

On a Northerly direction you can kitesurf most East coast beaches - as long as you don't mind the waves.

Chem works will give you good protection from the waves though which is nice when learning. Drive through Hartlepool, then to Seaton Carew and keep heading along the main road until you see a sign for Zincs road - take that down to the chemical works and park up. The beach is just over the dunes.

I would avoid Tynemouth until you are experienced. There are so many people, very little beach at high tide and high banks causing wind shadows and turbulence. It needs to be really onshore to be worth it and then if you can't ride upwind confidently you will be amongst the people and the surfers. I love the spot but hardly ever kite there as the conditions are nearly always better somewhere else - Blyth is a good spot that isn't far away - much quieter and far less hazards.

Hi, i am fairly new to the game also, and am always looking for a kite buddy. Just need the practice now, like yourself. I am live in the redcar area, so anywhere around there i would be up for some kite sessions. I check on here most days for posts and sessions happening. The stray, gare and paddies are my closest.

What about you?

Hi, thanks for your reply that's spot on. I'm going to have a drive down there possibly tomorrow and check it out although I'm a little hesitant to try self launching/landing on my own just yet so I'll see how brave I feel when I get up. Sorry I wasnt very clear in my post I meant surfing at Tynemouth, I've seen that it's going to be over 5ft tomorrow, get in!!

Hi Ross, I'm up in Prudhoe, Northumberland so everywhere is a drive for me! it's around 45mins to the Stockton area and around 35mins to Druridge. Blyth is my closest beach but I haven't been yet. I think I might go surfing tomorrow, not sure yet but If you are around this weekend and could do with a landing/launching assistant give me a knock. 07977 151101

Ah - Surfing! Excellent to have another normal surfer on board :D Tynemouth is definitely the spot for that!

The surf was really building whilst out today at Blyth so Tomorrow could be really good if the wind dies down. I might see you out there!

Hey Guys

I am new ish to sport, had a few lessons but work away so not been out in a while. Got me own gear etc. Similar to yourselves need practise time and help to launch and land, the power of the kite still makes me nervous (13m Ozone) but with a few in a similar place am sure it will be a laugh to learn.
I am home most weekends but that is the only times I can get out at the moment.
I live in Great Ayton so the local spots for me are around Redcar but don't mind travelling at all.

Can PM my mobile to anyone who wants to have a blast out sometime, could even organise a local instructor for the day somewhere if anyone fancies.

Good luck hope to see you out.

Anytime Gary my numbers up there.

Just to ask nekitesu, is Blyth suitable for Friday and Saturday? 18 knots on Saturday looks promising.

If it is will you be there? I’ve looked all over for kitesurfers to have a bit crack with, it would be good to sit and watch and maybe pick up some pointers.

Anyway I’ve got a job in South Shields to do so that’s settled it I’ll do the job then go to Tynemouth. I’m the fat kid with the second hand Bic board getting it constantly wrong. It’s all very embarrassing but great fun!

You might want to give budle a try as this will be the best place to avoid the waves, as the waves at Blyth will be even bigger than yesterday

Thats where i will be on Saturday and Sunday.

High tide is is at 14:05 on sat
High tide is at 14:45 on Sun.

Nice one Andrew, thanks for that. I was talking to a guy (didn’t get his name but he had a kite inflated on the beach so I went for a chat) at Tynemouth today and he recommended the exact same thing so that’s where I’m going to be this weekend and possibly tomorrow if I don’t get anymore work in, fingers crossed eh!

If anyone fancies a look out give me a call, I could do with a hand launching and landing and of course I will return the favour.

I got blasted this afternoon at Tynemouth but I managed to get up at least 4 times (wow, I know I’m amazing!!!) I had a big cheesey grin on my face until the next wave wiped it straight back off. Mint, loved it.

Hope to see some of you a Budle this weekend.
