Kitesurfing At Allonby Bay

Image of Allonby Location:

Description:

Not strictly in the North East! However, Allonby is under 2 hours drive from Newcastle and makes for an excellent alternative when you get tired of the prevailing SW winds on the East coast. Yes, there are places to kitesurf in the North East on a SW but both Budle and Redcar take an hour from Newcastle and you are guaranteed gusty winds. If you ever fancy lovely clean, smooth SW winds in the warmer Atlantic then Allonby is well worth the day trip. It's a nice sandy bay with a very gentle shelf so shallow for a long way out. Mostly sandy and a grass area to set up and pack away....nice!

Wind Direction Required:

Works in anything from North to SW with West being onshore. Great spot in a SW, W and NW winds.

Tide Required:

At high tide it runs right up to large pebbles so best avoided. At low tide the odd rock appears to worth checking where they are first. Tide range is very large but mid tide is fantastic.

Hazards:

Large pebbles at high tide and the odd rock at low tide.

Restrictions:

None

Popularity:

Very popular. Always someone out at the weekends when conditions are good.

Extra Information:

You can park up right against the beach and set up your kit on the field behind the car park. There are a few shops and a good cafe up the road for afterwards and a public toilet block a 100m or so away.
